meta-markets

My new obsession is meta-markets, an experimental site by MIT artist and designer Burak Arikan currently in private alpha.

It lets you ‘IPO’ del.icio.us, Feedburner and Facebook links amongst others, and to ‘buy’ shares in others’ links using an imaginary currency. I’ve been watching the notional share price of my Facebook profile climb for the last day. It’s mesmerising.

Part of the experiment, I gather, is to explore ways in which creative folks can leverage their immaterial labour on the net - something that we’re all trying to crack. But even just as a riff on the way that net memes come and go (see the Meth Minute 39 video that both references and is currently instantiating this…) it’s highly entertaining.
