my 3 favourite south london wifi cafes

My home router is broken at the moment, so I’m spending a lot of time sitting in wifi cafes. I’m always struggling to find good info online about nice cafes with free wifi, so in the interests of starting somewhere I thought I’d share my three South London favourites with the world.

1) Pullens Dining Room, Herne Hill

pullens herne hill

This isn’t just a free wifi spot, it’s the friendliest and most relaxed cafe cum bar cum restaurant in the whole of South London. They’re open from 12 till pretty late, the wifi is available until about 6 or 7, the lunch menu is decent and affordable and they perfectly happy to have you install yourself in a corner for hours.

Wifi from noon to 7pmish

Upside: You can lose a whole day there

Downside: No sofas

2) Lounge, Atlantic Rd, Brixton

lounge cafe brixtonI find the wifi here patchy sometimes, but the staff are incredibly friendly, there are big squishy sofas to get lost in, and the food isn’t bad. They also do a lunchtime deal offering one of a range of dishes plus a glass of wine for about a fiver, which is fab if you want your work-break with a tipple. Of these three, Lounge has the most power outlets; but beware of the noonday influx of mothers with toddlers though if you’re trying to make a Skype call…

Wifi from 11-730

Upside: Lots of power outlets

Downside: Can be noisy

3) Saint Francis, Atlantic Rd, Brixton

This is a newish opening, hence the lack of picture. Saint Francis looks like one of those walk-straight-past-it-it-might-be-dodgy bar/cafes that pop up regularly in Brixton, but is actually staffed by lovely friendly folks and makes a splendid and affordable latte. They do a pizza or pasta for £5 ‘credit crunch lunch’ that goes down very well, don’t hassle you if you want to park yourself in a corner and type away, and definitely don’t tell you off for plugging in. And there are plenty of plugs. And it’s quietish, AND they have a huge box of Thomas The Tank Engine Brio, peaceful music, comfy sofas and those little biscotti. And the wifi is fast and reliable.
Wifi from 11 till late

Upside: Lovely and quiet, fast wifi
Downside: With so few customers it may not survive.

A further upside to St Francis is the excellent artwork. Study the large painting of Saint Francis standing with all God’s creatures: the wolf; the trout; the stegosaurus. Awesome.

Saint Francis is now my number one favourite home from home cafe, since they gave me free pizza last night just for hanging around there all day. And very, very nice pizza it is too.
